How do I set up spam filtering on my account?

Your LetsHost hosting account comes with a free spam filtering feature – Apache SpamAssassin. Please see the following for some recommended configuration settings you can use to manage spam arriving in your email accounts.

To access the Apache SpamAssassin filter, please see the following steps:

  • Log in to your LetsHost Client Area and click on Services > My Services
  • You will see your products/services listed here. Click on Active beside your hosting package
  • On the left, click on the link Login to cPanel
  • Once logged in to cPanel, click the 'Spam Filters' icon under the "Email" section

On the 'Spam Filters' page, there is a toggle switch to the right of "Process New Emails and Mark them as Spam".

  • If the toggle switch has a grey colour and the "dot" is to the left, this is the OFF position, no automatic filtering of emails will be done in this state.
  • If the toggle switch has a blue colour and the "dot" is to the right, this is the ON position, automatic filtering will be enabled.

Once Apache SpamAssassin is ON you can set the "Spam Threshold Score".
The level of the score (between 0-10) will determine how strict the filter will be – 1 being the strictest (more emails being labelled as spam) and 10 being the most lenient (fewer emails being labelled as spam).
The score on the filter will be set to 5 by default and is the score we recommended to start with, you can then increase or lower the score as required.

By default, enabling the spam filter will mark the subject line of any email determined to be spam with "****SPAM****" in the subject line of the email, but it WILL still arrive in the inbox.

When an email gets scanned by Apache SpamAssassin it takes each part of the mail, Subject line, body text of the message, attachments, domain verification, etc. SpamAssassin then assigns each part a numerical score.

For example an email with a keyword like "Bitcoin" in the subject line:
The score assigned for the subject line by itself could be a +3.0 however the email does not have any attachments (+0.0 score) and the body looks normal and gets a score of +1.0, for a total score of +4.0. using the default score of 5.0 this mail would NOT be marked as spam.
However, taking the same example above and adding an attachment that is a known hacked executable file and adding a score of +5.0 for a new total of +9.0 this mail would be marked as spam.

The Apache SpamAssassin feature that comes with your account is a basic filter that works most of the time, but you may find some spam email still coming through to your account. In this case, we would recommend taking a look at our paid-for spam filtering service. This is an industrial-strength spam filter that LetsHost use for all our own mail.

If you require further information/assistance on this, please submit a ticket and a member of the team will be happy to assist further.
